LONDON, February 21, 2013 — BT, one of the world’s leading communications services companies, and Axiom, the world’s largest and fastest growing non-traditional provider of legal services, today announced that they have entered into a three-year, multi-million pound outsourcing relationship. Under the terms of the agreement, Axiom will provide a multi-shore, technology-enabled managed service responsible for the end-to-end management of a wide variety of commercial contracts across the UK, US and Asia. Axiom’s support will comprise an integrated team operating out of its locations in England, Northern Ireland, India, and the US, and will be powered by its cloud-based technology architecture.
Axiom will leverage its cloud-based platform, IRIS, to handle BT’s contracts, which will range in complexity from standardised contracts to sophisticated, managed services agreements. The Axiom team will work across the entire lifecycle of the contracting process.
For BT, the relationship with Axiom is part of a broader vision to broaden its supplier strategy to focus its legal department on activities which directly support competitive advantage. Axiom’s support will allow the BT legal team to delegate work that does not require their specific expertise in order to focus on higher value add activities, and the increasing legal and regulatory challenges that impact business objectives and corporate strategy.
Axiom’s support will also help address the largely untapped business opportunity that can be driven through improved contracting velocity. IRIS will also allow for the systematic capture of contract information to help monitor contract performance and alert stakeholders of contractual rights/obligations. By applying process and technology innovation to reduce the time required to create and execute agreements, Axiom will allow BT to capture incremental revenue.
According to Axiom President, Paul Carr, the contracting process is a woefully underserved segment of the legal services market: “Contracts are the most important points of interface between companies and their customers, suppliers and employees, with ramifications well beyond the legal department. Despite this level of importance, contracting activities are often fragmented and lack investments in technology, resulting in inefficiency, and an inability to capture existing data which would inform business decisions and mitigate risk.”
BT is no stranger to legal outsourcing, having been an early adopter of more innovative approaches to traditional legal work. Those experiences have helped inform and shape this new relationship with Axiom. “Our primary goals in entering any outsourcing relationship are to increase efficiency, mitigate risk and free-up our internal resources to work on more strategic value add activities that are closely aligned with our corporate business objectives, “ said David Eveleigh, BT Global Services General Counsel. “In Axiom, we have found a partner with broad geographic coverage who possesses the legal and process expertise to tackle the entire contracts value chain which, in turn, allows us to reach, and hopefully, exceed our objectives.”
