NEW YORK & TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Axiom, a recognized leader in the business of law and a leading provider of technology-enabled legal and contracting services, today announced that Bryan Friedman will lead its Canadian business as General Manager. Based in Toronto, Friedman will spearhead Axiom’s continued growth in the Canadian marketplace, where, in addition to providing in-house legal departments with a high quality and cost effective alternative to law firms through its seasoned lawyer secondees, the firm has developed a transformative approach to the commercial contract process.
“Joining Axiom is that aspiration realized. I am excited by the unique opportunity to help Canadian clients experience a more modernized approach to the law, while helping Axiom solidify and grow its business in Toronto and across Canada.”
The Axiom business that Friedman will lead is the product of Axiom’s acquisition of the General Counsel business of Toronto-based innovative law firm, Cognition, announced in January of this year.
“Bryan is the ideal choice to help Axiom redefine and modernize the way legal work and contracting is done in Canada,” said Joe Milstone, Axiom Practice Manager and Cognition Co-Founder. “Axiom strongly believes that modernization can be achieved through a multi-disciplinary approach to the legal industry, leveraging the talents and expertise of technologists, process experts, business leaders and, of course, lawyers. Bryan is the embodiment of that multi-disciplinary approach. His entrepreneurial background combined with his experience in the legal and technology industries make him uniquely qualified to assist Canadian clients and drive further innovation in the marketplace.”
Prior to joining Axiom, Friedman led multiple start-up ventures in the technology and mobility space, including co-founding both Rithm Messaging Inc. and MavenSay Inc. In addition to his career as an entrepreneur, Friedman has significant experience in the legal industry, having worked as a corporate attorney for Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison in both New York and Toronto.
Axiom’s Canadian business now includes a team of 50 lawyers and a client roster that includes 60 leading global corporations. Axiom’s plans call for it to double its Canadian legal team over the next three years.
The Toronto office is one of Axiom’s seventeen offices across the globe. The firm comprises more than 1,500 lawyers, professionals, process engineers and technologists, serving over half the Fortune 100.
“I have aspired, for many years, to apply my skillset and experience at the intersection of business and the law,” said Friedman. “Joining Axiom is that aspiration realized. I am excited by the unique opportunity to help Canadian clients experience a more modernized approach to the law, while helping Axiom solidify and grow its business in Toronto and across Canada.”
Friedman received his JD from the University of Toronto and his BFA from New York University.
Note to Editors: With the announcement of its acquisition of the General Counsel business of Cognition in January, Axiom operated under the combined entity name of Axiom Cognition in order to honor Cognition’s reputation in the market and to strategically leverage its brand awareness with Canadian General Counsel. At the time, Axiom provided guidance that it would use Axiom Cognition for a transitional period until such time as the market was familiar enough with Axiom to make the Canadian office consistent with Axiom’s global brand. Given the market’s positive early response to the firm, this announcement marks the formal end of that transitional period. Going forward, the Canadian business will operate as Axiom.
Axiom, a recognized leader in the business of law, provides tech-enabled legal, contracts, and compliance solutions for large enterprises. Axiom’s solutions combine legal experience, technology, and data analytics to deliver work in a way that dramatically reduces risk, cost and cycle-time. The firm comprises 1,500 lawyers, professionals, process engineers and technologists who serve over half the Fortune 100 across 17 offices and 5 centers of excellence globally. www.axiomlaw.com
